Patterns

Grade: Primary, Junior

Facility: Gymnasium, multi-purpose room, outdoors

Overview:

Before you begin:

  • Divide the class into three groups

The Activity:

  • Instruct each group to create a visual pattern that is stationary and involves every group member. (A simple example would be to alternate students sitting and standing.)
  • Have each group present their pattern while the other groups try to figure out what the pattern is. After the first round of presentations, challenge groups to come up with a dynamic (moving) pattern. (Example: three students jumping up and down while remaining group members weave between them while skipping.)

Optional:

  • Use balls, skipping ropes, hula hoops and/or bean bags to add other elements to your pattern.
