Grade: 7- 8 Facility: Classroom, Gymnasium, Multipurpose, Outdoors Materials: - letter tiles or cards (to download these supports visit: www.ophea.net/dpa2007)
- 1 marker and a sheet of paper for each group
- posted list of warm-up activities
Safety Considerations: Remind participants to be cautious when moving and to be aware of the personal space of others. Check that each group of participants have enough space to perform the activities safely. Ensure that there are clear paths for travelling back and forth to obtain their letter tiles or cards. Activity Description: Scrabble!brings a new twist on the old fashioned Spelling Bee. This activity teaches spelling and encourages teamwork, fast thinking and co-operation. Kids won't even know they are s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g! Overview: - Begin the activity with participants sitting at their desks in groups (or on the ground, if the activity occurs outside the classroom).
- To warm up, have participants move their arms and legs simulating an action (e.g., dancing, boxing, riding a bicycle, rowing a boat, skipping with a rope) for one minute. Pick a participant to lead 5 – 10 repetitions of any exercise from the list of warm-up activities (e.g., knee lifts, stride jumps, heel touches), after completing 5 to10 repetitions of the exercise, or after 10 seconds, chose another leader to lead a different exercise.
- Start Scrabble!by having any participant volunteer from each group to hop, jump, or skip to collect a letter tile or card from the pile and bring it back to their group. While the other group members are waiting, they are linked together and performing can-can kicks (i.e. lift one knee and do a high kick with that same leg while doing a hop on the other leg. Repeat with the opposite legs).
- Participants in the group take turns retrieving letters and bringing them back to their group to form words. Once a word has been formed, the group yells out "Scrabble!" and one participant brings the word to you to be verified for accuracy and spelling.
- Once the word has been verified, one participant from each group collects all of the letters and returns them to the pile (or if they are cards, puts them back with the letter facing down on the floor).
- The game continues with participants from each group taking turns to retrieve tiles or cards and brings them back to their group until a new word is formed.
To keep score: - Words of less than 4 letters score 1 point for each letter in the word.
- Words of 5 or more letters earn 2 points per letter in the word.
