Facility: Gymnasium, multipurpose room or outdoors

Materials: Music (both fast and slow tempo), CD player, whistle

Activity Description: By taking a skill-theme approach to dance, students can learn the basic tools to help them move with a sense of freedom. This activity relies on teamwork and concentration for success!

Overview:

• Have students form lines of with around 5 students in each line.

• The goal for this activity is for the last student in each line to correctly perform a “routine” (succession of dance moves) which have been added by each student during the activity.

• The first two students in each line face each other while the remaining students look away.

• As the music starts, the student at the front of the line creates a “movement” to the music which is to be imitated by the next student in line. Once the second student learns this move, the first student turns away.

• The second student faces the next student in line and teachers this student the original dance move and adds one of her own.

• One by one, these moves pass down the line with each student interpreting the previous succession of moves, as well as adding their sequence of moves for everyone in her line to see and determine if their addition was correctly passed along.

• Switch the starter and work another move down the line and alternate between high and low tempo music.

• For more difficulty, form longer lines. By the time, the activity reaches the end of the line, the group will have created a unique dance.
