Math Match

Grade: Junior

Facility: Classroom, gymnasium, outdoors

Materials: Index cards, markers

Activity Description: This fun game combines numeracy and physical activity in a way that will get your students to think fast and move faster! Math Match is an easily adaptable game and is suitable for students of all math levels and physical abilities.

Overview:

Prepare question and answer cards using various math questions in advance. Assign half of the students question cards and the other half answer cards. (Each question card should have one answer card.)

At the start of the activity all students are to move around (e.g., running, jogging, hopping, skipping) the room with their cards. On a signal (e.g., whistle blow, music etc.) students must find the person with the answer to their math question. (e.g., question card: 5 X 7 = ____, answer card: 35) When they find their match, the pair of students completes their fitness task together (e.g., five chair step-ups) as specified by the teacher, trade in their card for a new card, then move around the room to start the activity all over again.
