Stretch Wave

Grade:
Junior - Intermediate
Facility:
Gymnasium
Materials:
Mats (optional)
Activity Description:
Teach the benefits of stretching with Stretch Wave, a fun group stretching activity that can help increase flexibility, improve range of motion, reduce injury during activity and prevent post-exercise muscle soreness.
Overview:
  • Have students form a circle in the gymnasium by standing arms length away from the other students beside them.
  • Teachers can lead the stretches or designate a student leader to lead the stretches.
  • The leader starts the wave by demonstrating a stretch and holding it for 15 to 30 seconds.
  • One at a time, in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, the students follow the leader creating a wave around the circle.
  • When the last person has completed the stretch, the leader starts a new stretch.
  • Students should hold a stretch until it is their turn to perform the next stretch.
  • Circle size and number of groups should be considered to ensure each student is holding the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds.
