October offers a good opportunity to promote physical activity in the workplace, especially during Healthy Workplace Week, October 20-26. Events
- Health, Work & Wellness Conference, September 28-30, 2003 Hilton Lac Leamy, Gatineau, Quebec. This year's theme is "Leading by Example". For more information, visit http://www.healthworkandwellness.com/
- Workplace Wellness Conference, October 22, 2003, Kempenfelt Centre, Barrie.
Good For Life, Royal Victoria Hospital and the Simcoe County District Health Unit are teaming up to offer the 2nd Annual Workplace Wellness Conference. - The topic of physical activity promotion in the workplace was discussed at the Ontario In Motion conference in February 2003. You may find useful some of the information on Partnering with Workplaces to help you understand the various components of Comprehensive Workplace Health Promotion. Go to www.ophea.net/parc, select the Conference Proceedings, Adults and Families, Partnering with Workplaces and finally "Tips & Tools & Strategies". A "ready-to-use" workshop and all the supporting materials are also available on the PARC website under "Adaptable Workshops".
- The Canadian Mental Health Association (www.cmha.ca) has lots of practical information about using physical activity to cope with stress. Check out the First Aid Kit for Stress and Tension, Resources, Stress Stoppers and 18 Tips for Dealing with Stress and Tension in English at http://www.cmha.ca/english/coping_with_stress/ and in French at http://www.cmha.ca/french/coping_with_stress/. You can make use of these tips in different ways, such as posting them on the bulletin board or sending one or two per day to your employees or colleagues during Healthy Workplace Week. The CMHA also delivers workshops and information on these can be found at http://www.stresssense.com
- The Business Case for Active Living in the Workplace has been available for some time now and contains some useful statistics if you wish to promote the economic benefits of active living. - The Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute (CFLRI) has information about stress and physical activity in the Research File series and the Lifestyle Tips series. Physical activity in the workplace is the focus of the 2001 Physical Activity Monitor. This information is available in both French and English at http://www.cflri.ca
- The Canadian Health Network provides tools and information about physical activity and stress in both French and English. Visit http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/
- The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada offers a number of simple tips to help people reduce their stress. Go to http://www.heartandstroke.ca/ and select Healthy Living and then Manage your Stress. The French information is available at http://www.fmcoeur.ca. Coping with Stress, from Heart & Stroke Foundation is a small booklet that helps with understanding stress and offers a wide variety of tips to deal with it. The booklet is available free of charge in French and English from the Heart
& Stroke Foundation at 1-888-HSF-INFO.
- The Case for Exercise as an Anti-Depressant is a Powerpoint presentation citing studies linking physical activity and reduced depression rates. Depression involves major workplace costs through absenteeism and reduced productivity. You can view the presentation at http://www.gla.ac.uk/ibls/US/physio/nbsseminar/sld001.htm. Please keep in mind that it contains a mix of Scottish, British and American information.
- The Heart Health ESL Curriculum Resource produced by Toronto Public Health provides lesson plans and activities to teach heart healthy messages to adults. Content sections on physical activity and stress can be downloaded from http://www.toronto.ca/health/esl_hearthealth.htm
- Workplace Wellness 2003 Posters can be downloaded from the Halton Region Health Department web site at http://www.region.halton.on.ca/health/. Check out their Healthy Moms and Heart Health and Cancer Prevention Programs for more details.
- Juggling home and work life is a challenge for most people and Health Canada has produced a good document exploring the issue and offering general recommendations to reduce the problem.
