Overview


Always Changing is a school-based resource designed to teach pre-teens in Grades 5 and 6 about the transition between childhood and adolescence, and the beginning stages of puberty.

Provided to schools free of charge, Always Changing addresses issues such as adolescent growth, development, personal

hygiene and self-esteem. Directly linked to the Healthy Living

strand of the Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum Policy, Always Changing is not only beneficial to pre-teens but

also to their parents and educators. Available in English and

French, Always Changing comes complete with worksheets,

quizzes, crosswords, and other fun resources and teaching strategies. It also contains a booklet with information relevant to parents, and product samples from the participating sponsors.

 

Always Changing was developed by Procter and Gamble Inc. and

is endorsed and promoted by Ophea and the Canadian

Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and

Dance (CAHPERD).

Resource Structure

 

The ALWAYS Changing resource is broken into four separate lessons, each with its own outcomes, materials and lesson plan. Topics include skin care, oral hygiene, perspiration and body odor, male and female reproductive systems and physical changes experienced during puberty.

Activity Idea: Question Box

 

Using an anonymous question box can greatly add to puberty education. While preparing to answer questions utilize the four-point plan ensuring each point is represented in your answers:

  • Establish the facts
  • Dispel myths
  • If you don’t know, find out together!

Values

  • Share global values, non-discrimination, mutual respect and privacy
  • Help students explore the values and opinions of their families

Responsibilities

  • Actions have consequences
  • Students can take more responsibility for health and wellness

  • Value and respect self and others

What does this program include?

 

Always Changing includes several different resources to help students understand their changing bodies, the stages of puberty and the role of personal appearance in a positive self-image.

 

Video

  • This video is divided into modular sections and can be shown in segments or in a single viewing.  It provides a look at students in the fifth grade and how they approach learning about growth and development.

What are the educational outcomes of this program?

 

This program has been developed to help students achieve the following outcomes:

 

  • Students will identify the connection between personal choice and healthy body systems including body care and body knowledge.
  • Students with identify the changes associated with puberty.
  • Students will practice living skills associated with puberty including self-awareness, personal responsibility, respect for others and goal setting.
