Ontario Snow Resorts Association and OSBIE in response to a Coroner’s recommendations after the deaths of two students on Ontario ski hills have initiated the mandatory wearing of appropriate snow sport helmets for skiing and snowboarding.
Therefore, effective September 2009 all participants must wear an appropriate snow sport helmet for skiing/snowboarding for school excursions to OSRA member facilities, including students, school staff and school volunteers.
The Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines have made the appropriate changes to the elementary and secondary curricular alpine skiing pages to reflect this change. Visit: www.ontariosafetyguidelines.ca

Great idea?

Including, presumably, curling. These are high school kids, not Ming vases. Two deaths are very sad events. But statistically, driving to the ice rink is vastly more dangerous (as in thousands of times more dangerous). We don't disallow kids from driving in cars. When we overreact like this, we have only the best intentions, and the wellbeing of kids at heart. But I think we can predict how many winter activities are going to happen now (who will provide helmets? Is the paperwork and trouble worth it? Best just stay inside). We HURT kids by overreacting. We fail to nurture them by allowing them to see and learn from reasonable risk assessment and mature reaction to normal events, including accidents.
