Concussion Protocols for Teachers and Coaches

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that disrupts the way the cells in the brain normally work and which can vary in severity and consequences.

A concussion is caused by a strike or jolt to the head, face or neck, or a blow to the body (e.g., a sideways check to the body) that causes a whiplash effect on the head and neck where the brain impacts the skull.

A person does not have to lose consciousness to sustain a concussion.
In fact, most people never do.

Safety Guidelines Helmet Change – Effective September 2009

Ontario Snow Resorts Association and OSBIE in response to a Coroner’s recommendations after the deaths of two students on Ontario ski hills have initiated the mandatory wearing of appropriate snow sport helmets for skiing and snowboarding.

Therefore, effective September 2009 all participants must wear an appropriate snow sport helmet for skiing/snowboarding for school excursions to OSRA member facilities, including students, school staff and school volunteers.
