Safety Guidelines

The Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines represent the minimum standards for risk management practice for physical education, physical activities and sports within school boards. They outline safe practices for activities in order to minimize the risk of accidents or injuries. Most School Boards in Ontario have subscribed to the online Safety Guidelines and their related services.

The Safety Guidelines are organized into three modules for each of the elementary and secondary levels: Elementary and Secondary Curricular Programs, Elementary and Secondary Intramural Clubs and Activities, and Elementary and Secondary Interschool Athletics.

School Boards that have purchased access to the Safety Guidelines and their related services also have copyright and may copy and distribute them within their board at their discretion. School boards may RAISE the standards if they wish, but they are strongly encouraged not to LOWER them.

A board-specific password is required to access the Safety Guidelines website and can be obtained by contacting your board’s Safety contact. If you do not know who your board’s Safety contact is, please e-mail safety [at] ophea [dot] net.

If you are interested in accessing the Safety Guidelines but are currently not a subscriber, contact safety [at] ophea [dot] net for more information.

The Safety Guidelines were developed by Ophea in partnership with the Ontario School Board’s Insurance Exchange (OSBIE), the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association – Ontario (CIRA-ON), the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA), and the Ontario Association for Supervisors of Physical and Health Education (OASPHE). The Safety Guidelines are managed by Ophea and are funded through a fee-for-service model.
