H&PE Curriculum Implementation Funding Discontinuation

Monday, October 15, 2018 - 13:33

Since 1921, Ophea has been working to support the health and learning of children and youth in Ontario. We are led by the vision that all children and youth value and enjoy the lifelong benefits of healthy, active living.

For over 16 years, annual funding from the Government of Ontario has enabled Ophea to support Health and Physical Education curriculum implementation.

The Government of Ontario has made a decision to discontinue this funding.

Through this funding we:

  • Trained over 25,000 teachers to be effective, and confident educators and leaders
  • Facilitated school and school board, and public health unit implementation of key policies and priorities
  • Developed and maintained over 20 healthy, active living resources addressing topics such as: cyberbullying, physical literacy, healthy eating, substance use, safety and injury prevention and mental health
  • Enabled customized support to all school boards, health units, and faculties of education
  • Launched evidence-informed H&PE coaching model to over 16 Ontario school boards
  • Provided quality, relevant information to Ontario’s 180,000 teachers

As a result of the curriculum implementation funding decision, over the coming months, the type and volume of support Ophea can provide will be impacted, specifically:

  • Fewer, free or subsidized training opportunities
  • Removal of a number of resources from teachingtools.ophea.net. Still Available: Ophea’s H&PE Curriculum Resources: Grades 1-8 (lesson plans), H&PE Curriculum Resources: Grades 9-12 (supplements), and the Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines
  • Reduction of customized consultation support to school boards, public health, provincial partners, researchers
  • Discontinuation of our internationally recognized school board instructional coaching model
  • Decreased evidence sharing and presence at regional, provincial and national events

Ophea is a provincial subject association for Health and Physical Education and our work is more relevant than ever. Ophea is committed to supporting our audiences to have the greatest positive impact on the health and well-being of Ontario’s children and youth. Please continue to engage with us:
