Ophea’s Response to the Government’s Updated H&PE Curriculum Direction
Today the Ministry of Education released its intended direction for revisions to the Health and Physical Education (H&PE) curriculum.
Ophea believes that H&PE is fundamental to public education and that students have a right to an up-to-date, evidence informed curriculum.
Ophea is supportive of government’s efforts to ensure ALL Ontario students can see themselves within the curriculum and that important issues such as consent, healthy relationships, and sexual diversity will be provided in an age-appropriate way so that students have the information they need to make decisions related to their health and well-being and to protect themselves from potential harms.
We are also pleased to see updates to reflect cannabis legalization, mental health, and concussions. The 2019 H&PE curriculum will recognize the shared responsibility that respects the role of both parents and teachers.
The effective implementation of H&PE in schools has the potential to positively impact over 2 million Ontario children and youth and to provide them the knowledge and skills to lead a healthy, active life.
