Teachers Talk Sex Ed: Practical Approaches to Implementation

This webinar will provide the opportunity for you to:

  • Listen to educators with experience teaching human development and sexual health share effective strategies and practices they have implemented in their classrooms.
  • Ask through a moderated Q&A session, educators from across the province questions (an educator panel will answer audience questions that have been submitted in advance from other educators, as well as questions that are raised during the webinar).
  • Learn as experienced educators respond to primary, junior and intermediate themed scenarios with a focus on gender identity and sexual orientation as well as consensual and non-consensual behaviours, through identifying instructional strategies and practical approaches to try.

Presenters

David Benay has been a teacher and personal trainer since 2006. He has over 17 years of experience working with children as a camp counsellor, sports coach, personal trainer and teacher. His Bike Across Canada Project in the Classroom is one of seven 2015-2016 Winners of the CEA Ken Spencer Award for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.

Heather Gardner is an elementary health and physical educator with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and curriculum consultant with Ophea. Heather has developed over 40 resources for H&PE, and was involved in the development of Ophea’s Human Development and Sexual Health lesson plans, which were developed in consultation with H&PE curriculum consultants, educators representing public and Catholic schools from urban and rural regions of Ontario and through the engagement of subject matter experts and community partners representing public health and community health organizations. In addition, Heather has provided hundreds of professional learning opportunities for educators across Canada.

George Kourtis is a Program Coordinator for Health and Physical Education/Athletics at the Toronto District School Board for the past 7 years. He is also an Instructor of H&PE Additional Qualification courses at OISE, which he has done for 15 years. George is the co-author of Thompson Educational Publishing of the Body Weight chart series, and Functional Fitness Resource and he is actively involved in the community with children and fitness related endeavours.

Kim Krug is a Health and Physical Education teacher with the Halton District School Board. She has taught HPE at the intermediate level for 25 years, including 7 years with the Comox Valley District School Board in B.C. at the grade 9 level. Kim has worked within her board on a number of H&PE committees including implementation teams for the 2015 H&PE curriculum, and Quality Daily Fitness. She has worked with colleagues to design and deliver workshops and resources for teachers in Halton in a variety of areas including: TGFU, Dance, Track & Field, Gymnastics and QDF.
